The Hawaiian Islands, including Maui, are located on acme of a geographic hot spot. A hot spot is an expanse within the Globe'south drape that releases heat. This heat forms magma that is eventually pushed to the surface and released through volcanoes.

The Hawaiian Islands were formed by the largest volcanoes on Earth. This means that some major volcanic activity has happened here throughout history to grade the beautiful islands every bit we know them today.

Haleakalāhas erupted at least x times in the past ane,000 years. The last eruption occurred erstwhile between 1480 and 1600 according to scientific records. The history of Haleakalā and its recent activity point that the volcano will erupt again in the future.

Although studies indicate that Haleakalā will erupt again, the volcano is currently dormant. The volcano is currently being monitored as a moderate priority co-ordinate to the National Volcano Early on Alert System. The highest priority volcanoes in Hawaii are Kilauea and Mauna Loa considering they are both active volcanoes.

Volcanoes are monitored using a seismograph which records earthquake motion. An increase in the number of earthquakes in a volcano mean that the volcano has become restless. This is an important monitoring tool because a serial of earthquakes usually occur before an eruption happens.

Shield volcanoes, similar Haleakalā, are usually not explosive when they erupt. So, they practice non pose a large risk to people as long as they are not on the rift zones. Instead of exploding, they release a fountain-like menstruation of lava that forms cinder cones and spatter cones. Both cinder cones and spatter cones from past eruptions tin can exist seen in Haleakalā  Crater. These cones resemble mini volcanoes inside the crater.

If Haleakalā does erupt again in the future, the areas that would receive the almost volcanic action are along the southwest and east rift zones. These rift zones are areas where the volcano is dandy or splitting apart. These cracks make the area weak and so magma can easily come up to the surface here. These rift zones pass from La Perouse Bay, through Haleakalā  Crater, and onto Hana.

Erupting shield volcanoes are known for existencerare spectacles. An eruption draws in tourists from all over the world. The eruptions are usually basis flows of lava so visitors are able to witness the effect from many vantage points all over the volcano.
